The “spine” house sits on a mountain ridge in West Virginia with spectacular views in three directions. The weekend retreat is designed so that the main circulation path through the house (the spine) runs parallel to the narrow ridge. Clerestory windows mark the top of this path and lead to a deck on the far end of the house. The two bedroom wings spread away from this core to maximize privacy and views from the three bedrooms. The wings are supported on timber posts and bracing as the terrain falls away from the ridge.
